1998 Inductees

Captain David Crocker graduated from Fargo North High School in 1969.  While attend North High he was a member of Key Club and the swim team.  David pursued his interest in aerospace science through study at Iowa State University, earning his BS in Aerospace Engineering in 1974.  The following year he completed work on his Masters Degree in Aeronautical Systems at the University of West Florida.  Those efforts were followed by his service as a Navy helicopter pilot, and later graduating from the Navy Test Pilot School. In 1992, David graduated from the Navy Nuclear Power School, and has served as Executive Officer of the aircraft carrier, USS George Washington and Commanding Officer of the USS Inchon.  He is currently the Commanding Officer of USS Carl Vinson, an aircraft carrier.

A 1970 graduate of North High School, John made his mark at the school as one of the premier golfers, both locally and statewide.  While he sharpened his competitive instincts and skills in the hockey arena, it was on the golf course that he discovered the passion that would become his life's work.   John has served as a golf professional for nineteen years, with the last sixteen having been at the Oxbow Country Club at Hickson, ND.  He has been a resource for the National High School Coaches' Association and for Young Presidents of America; and in 1995 was selected Dakota Chapter Instructor-of-the-Year and Minnesota Section Instructor -of-the-Year.  During the past twenty years, John has earned champion status in numerous local and regional golf tournaments along with qualification to a number of National Club Championships.

For more than thirty years, North High School, hockey and the Fowler family name have been synonymous.  Red Fowler and his wife Betty have been a part of the Spartan family of student life and activities throughout the enrolment of six of their children and nine grandchildren - from 1965 to 1997.  While hockey was the sport of foremost interest for Red, his family members have bee active participants in eight of the school's sports programs, service groups, and have been among the Honor Roll scholars as well.   Red's more direct service to the school and its program has been as a volunteer and salaried official working for years at regular-season hockey games and during tournaments.  He was one of the founders of the Northside Raider Hockey Club, which serves as the youth feeder program for the North Spartans.  He and his wife have also served as members of the Spartan Booster Club.  In 1992, Red was inducted into the North Dakota Hockey Hall of Fame. Red's career away from North High School was that of Post Office Employee with both the Railway Mail Service and the Fargo Post Office.

A native of rural Iowa, Rhoda has had a lifelong enjoyment of reading, speech, and theatre, which in turn became her life's work in the schools where she taught.  She taught in Iowa schools from 1950-1959, at which time she moved to the Fargo Public Schools.  Her first teaching in Fargo was speech and English at Agassiz Junior High, before moving to North High in the fall of 1967.  She continued at North High until her retirement in 1990.   During her tenure at North High, Rhoda became a leader in the development of competitive forensics for students in North Dakota high schools.  She was responsible for writing the state rulebook governing speech contests in the state.  While directing forensics programs at North High, her teams won seven consecutive state speech championships; and her teams placed third at the National Forensic League's National Speech Tournament on two separate occasions. Rhoda has been the recipient of many awards, including the NFL Diamond Key Award for outstanding speech coaches; the North High "Teacher-of-the-Year" in 1984; was inducted into the North Dakota Speech and Theatre Hall-of-Fame; and Moorhead State University names its speech tournament sweepstakes award in her honor. 

A 1982 graduate of North High School, Kathryn earned a National Merit Scholarship and appointments to both the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Naval Academy.  Kathryn's high school activities included being a member of the schools first girl's cross-country team, track team member, and student trainer.  Her music proficiency led to her selection to a national youth orchestra, America's Youth in Concert.   Kathryn graduated with Merit from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1986; and then started a series of duty assignments with the Department of the Navy.  She did acoustics research with the Naval Research Laboratory, completed two six-month Mediterranean deployments with the Atlantic Fleet, and served as Helicopter Controller on the USS San Diego during the Persian Gulf War.   From early 1992 until the present, Kathryn has worked at the Hanford Nuclear Site in the state of Washington. Her initial assignment was as Cognizant Engineer responsible for Nuclear Safeguards and Physical Security Systems; and is presently responsible for Facility X-ray, Communication, Electrical Power, and Fire Detection/Suppression/Alarm Systems.

A 1978 graduate of North High School, Sue earned honors as one of the school's top women golfers. She was a letter-winner five years while competing at the high school level; and was recognized as an All- Conference golfer three years along with two years as an All-State performer. In 1978, Sue was the State Tournament Medalist. Sue earned a BS Degree in Home Economics Education and Health from Iowa State University in 1983, where she continued her competitive interest in golf at the collegiate level.   After leaving Iowa State, Sue taught in the Fargo, ND, Vail, CO, and Kansas City, KS, school systems before returning to Fargo to join in the family retail business. She has also been very active in local and state golf competitions since her return to Fargo.   Sue's husband owns and operates a farm near Wahpeton, ND; and she is the owner/operator of the Fargo Northport Ben Franklin Store.

A 1980 graduate of North High School, Sarah represents a classic example of the student-athlete at its best. Academically, she earned National Honor Society and National Merit Scholar status; while athletically she gained exceptional distinction by winning four individual State Championships in Track and was a member of State Championship Teams in Basketball, Volleyball and Track during the 1979 school year. Sarah was also recognized With AU-Conference status in both basketball and track.   Sarah was a Rhodes Scholar nominee for North Dakota while attending Carleton College (MN). She completed her B.A. Degree in Chemistry with honors in 1984. Following graduation from Carleton, she had a brief teaching and coaching career before returning to graduate school in pursuit of a medical degree. Sarah earned M.S. and M.D. Degrees from the University of Wisconsin, and completed her Pediatric Residency at the University of Minnesota in 1997. Sarah currently serves as a staff physician in the Department of Pediatrics at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis

A member of the first class to graduate from North High School in 1966, Dick was a three-sport athlete along with active involvement in music and service groups at the school. He played football, basketball, and golf earning All-State recognition in basketball during his senior year.  After graduating from North High, Dick attended NDSU. where he earned a BA Degree. His pursuit of a medical degree led him to the UND School of Medicine for his Bachelor of Medicine, and then to Texas Tech University School of Medicine where he earned his Doctor of Medicine. He continued his study at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, completing an Internship and Residency in Diagnostic Radiology.  After serving as a member of the teaching staff with the US Medical Corps from 1973 to 1981, Dick returned to the Fargo area and became active in the practice of Diagnostic Radiology. He has worked with many of the local clinics and hospitals, and as an independent, in providing diagnostic radiology services. His interest in youth sports and activities has kept him involved with various church and community programs.

A 1972 graduate of North High School, Bill was among the most accomplished Spartan runners in the state during his high school career. His leadership abilities led to recognition as a team captain in each of his three years on the track squad; and his running ability led to his earning an Individual Championship in the State Cross Country Meet during his senior year along with other top five finishes in the mile and two mile in track. His performance in the two mile remains a school record.

Bill earned a BS degree in Pharmacy from NDSIJ, followed by a Residency in Hospital Pharmacy from the University of Nebraska . His Doctorate of Pharmacy Degree was completed in 1980 at the University of Utah.  Bill's outstanding efforts in the field of toxicology' have resulted in Director appointments during his career at University Hospitals in Kansas City. MO. Buffalo, NY, and San Antonio, DC. He has just recently been appointed Managing Director of the South Texas Poison Center, Dept- of Surgery, and University of Texas at San Antonio. He has also authored or collaborated in the writing of over 200 professional articles during his career.
