2003 Inductees

A native of Ayer, MA., Richard (Dick) Bourne enlisted in the U.S. Navy soon after graduation from high school in 1952. The three year tour he served stimulated his appetite for aviation, and led to enlistment in the U.S. Air Force in 1956, and a 2nd Lt. Commission and pilot wings in 1957. His military career of 21 years during peacetime and combat was truly storied, and resulted in his earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air Medal, a Meritorious Service Medal, and a Commendation Medal. He retired a Major in 1973.  From 1976 to 1993, Maj. Bourne was the leader of the North High AFJROTC Unit, providing students with a perspective on aviation and the military in America based on theory and "the real world". Under his leadership, the ND 41 st AFJROTC amassed numerous HonorlMeritorious Awards; and "the Maj." was recognized personally on many occasions for his distinguished service. His efforts to partner North High with the rest of the community led to many service awards along with twice being named NHS Teacher of the Year, and FPS Teacher of the Year in 1990. He was truly a "Pied Piper".

A 1967 graduate of North High School, William was an All Conference football player, two-year captain of the hockey team, and an active member of the Key Club. He attended UND, earning a BS Degree in Psychology in 1971, along with a 2nd Lieutenant Commission from the Marine Corps. In 1972, William earned his Wings of Gold after fixed wing and helicopter training; and a number of worldwide deployments followed during the 1970s. In 1979, he joined the Marine Helicopter Squadron One.  During the 1980s and 1990s, William served in numerous capacities, including work in the Persian Gulf, Norway, Honduras, and the U.S., planning for national security contingencies. His exemplary efforts earned him the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Services Commendation Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, along with a Presidential Service Badge for services rendered in the presidential mission, which included piloting for Presidents Carter, Reagan, and Bush, Sr. After his selection to full Colonel, William served in several leadership assignments with the Marine Corps before retiring in 2001 with 30 years of service.

A native of Benson, MN, Dean and his family moved to Moorhead, where he graduated from high school in 1963. He attended UND, earning a BS Degree in Business Administration in 1967. After leaving college, Dean returned to the Fargo-Moorhead area and began his career with the Hornbacher Grocery business. He had worked part-time throughout his high school and college years in the grocery and clothing business. Dean became the Chief Operating Officer of Hornbachers in 1980, and has maintained an active role in the metropolitan community in support of schools, student activities, and the general living climate in our area. Dean and his wife, JoAnn, have lived in north Fargo for more than 30 years; and their two children attended the Fargo Schools, graduating from North High. He served on the Spartan Booster Board from 1986 to 1990, acting as President of the group during the 1988-89 school year. He received the FPS Partner in Education Award in 1989, served in the Village Family Service Center Board from 1991-98, received the "Governor's Award for the Arts" in 1999, and has served on the Children's Village Foundation Board since 1999.

A 1985 graduate of North High, DeAnne was active in student government and music throughout her high school years. She was also a three-sport cheerleader, working with the football, hockey, and boy's basketball programs. DeAnne attributes her present affinity to commitment, communication, enthusiasm and organization to the fact that her high school interests promoted those same qualities. DeAnne attended MSUM, earning a Degree in Speech Communications in 1989. She then entered the UND Law School, earning her Juris Doctorate in 1992. While attending law school, De Anne clerked for a present member of the ND Supreme Court. After graduation, she opened a private law practice, working with a variety of different case types, but eventually moving toward family law. In 1997, she joined a local firm as a working partner, specializing in family law. She was a candidate for a District Judgeship in eastern North Dakota in 2003. DeAnne and her husband, Kevin ('77), are parents of three daughters. They live in north Fargo, and are active in local school and youth activities.

Greg was a 1968 graduate of North High, having earned National Honor Society recognition in both academics and athletics. His student involvement included Key Club presidency and ND Boys State participation along with football, swimming, and Legion baseball. His performance and leadership skills led to selection as captains in each of those sports during his senior year. He earned an undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University in 1972; and a Juris Doctorate Degree from UND in 1975. From 1975-1979, Greg served as a USAF Judge Advocate to fulfill his military obligation for the U.S.A.P. Scholarship that he had earned. He has continued his career as a lawyer since returning to Fargo in 1979. Greg has distinguished himself in local, state, and regional circles through his extensive volunteerism, including Youth Swim Coach, Board of Directors memberships for the American Cancer Society, F-M YMCA, and the United Way. In addition, he officiates high school swimming at the local and state levels; and he has authored a manual for officiating swimming in North Dakota.
