2004 Inductees
MIKE COWMAN
Following his graduation from North High School in 1971, Mike attended Mesa (AZ) Community College (1972-1973) and Arizona State University (1973-1974). He entered the field of TV photography and reporting; and earned recognition as a host and producer of daily magazine shows in Kansas and Arizona.
In 1983, Mike joined CNN in Los Angeles, becoming a correspondent and producer of sports coverage in the western United States; and covering summer/winter Olympics in 1984 (Los Angeles/Sarajevo), 1988 (Seoul/Calgary), and 1992 (Barcelona). He also reported or produced collegiate and professional championship events in baseball, basketball, football and hockey.
In 1995 he returned to Tucson, AZ, as News Director and later Sports Director for station KOLD; and in 1998, moved to station KWBA as Director of Special Events. In 2003, Mike formed Moonrise Productions, a TV company which produced sports shows and special projects for the Fox Sports Network. Mike and his wife, Phyllis, have one son.
PAUL MARQUART
A 1975 graduate of North High School, Paul wrote for the Spartan Scroll (school newspaper) and enjoyed considerable success as a wrestler, earning All-Conference honors and placing 3rd at the N.D. State Wrestling Tournament in 1975.
In 1977, Paul completed his A.S. Journalism-Printing Degree at NDSCS in Wahpeton. He earned a B.A. Degree in Journalism from UND in 1980, and a year later completed a B.S. Degree on Social Studies. Paul continued to wrestle competitively, earning NCAA Div. II All-American status in 1980. He completed a M.S. Degree in Educational Administration in 1985 from the Tri-College University in Fargo-Moorhead.
Paul has served the community of Dilworth, MN since 1984, where he has taught U.S. Government and coached in the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton activities programs. He was elected mayor of Dilworth in 1990, serving with distinction and providing great leadership in economic development and residential expansion. After a decade of service as Dilworth's mayor, Paul was elected to the Minnesota State House of Representatives in 2001. Paul and his wife, Colleen, have two daughters.
ANN MELVEY MCCONN
Ann graduated from North High School in 1978, where she participated in golf and tennis along with service on the Student Council. She earned a B.A. Degree in Political Science from the Univ. of Colorado (1982); a Juris Doctorate from UND (1985); and completed an MBA in 1987 from Minnesota State University Moorhead.
Following early work as a law clerk with the East Central Judicial District, Ann entered the banking industry as a Trust Investment Officer with First Nat'l. Bank of N.D. (1988-1995); then, after moving to Community First, she became a Trust Division Manager (1996 - 2003). In 2002, Ann was appointed by Alerus Financial as its Marketing President.
Ann is involved with many volunteer efforts in Fargo-Moorhead, working with United Way, the Rape and Abuse Center, Hope Lutheran Foundation, Dollars for Scholars, as well as the Fargo-Cass Economic Development and Downtown Community Partnership. She and her husband, Butch, have a son and a daughter.
ROBERT TRIEGLAFF
A native North Dakotan, Bob was born and raised in Casselton, where he graduated in 1954. Following service in the U.S. Air Force, he enrolled at NDSCS, and transferred later to Moorhead (MN) State College, where he completed a B.A. Degree in Accounting and Business Administration in 1962. A year later, he received a B.S. Degree in Business Education.
Bob's first teaching assignment was in Mapleton, ND, where he also coached football, basketball and track. Upon completion of a M.S. Degree from NDSU in 1965, he accepted a position to become a charter member of the teaching staff at North High. During his tenure at NHS (1965-1996), he taught Business Education and coached Boys Cross Country along with Boys and Girls Tennis.
In addition to the years of successful teaching, his coaching efforts earned him numerous awards, including Regional and State Coach of the Year, nomination as national Coach of the Year in Tennis, and induction into the ND State Coaches' Hall of Fame. He is married, and has two daughters.
BETH STEWART VERDORN
A 1971 graduation of North High School, Beth excelled in theatre and forensics, where she earned several regional and state awards, including Best Actress in the State One-Act Championship in 1971. She also participated in the bi-monthly “Spartans-on-the-Air” radio show that aired on two local stations.
In 1975, Beth earned a B.S Degree in Speech/Theatre Arts and Spanish from the Minnesota State University Moorhead, where she also became active with The Straw Hat Players (a summer theatre program). She continued her formal education at Hunter College in New York City, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in 1982.
Beth has taught English as a Second Language for over two decades in New York and New Jersey, and has authored a number of Children’s Books, Stories, and Board Books (1987). She has been actively involved in foreign language and theatre programs throughout her working career. Beth and her actor husband, Jerry, have two sons.
