2005 Inductees

A 1972 graduate of North High, Jonathan was active in the school's speech and debate programs, earning a number of honors in local, regional and state competitions. He competed in the National Forensics League national tournament during two of his three years at North High. He was also a National Merit Finalist; and was one of two state winners of the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Award.

After graduation, he attended Geo. Washington University (Washington, DC), and then McGill University (Montreal, Quebec), where he earned a BA Degree in philosophy and political science in 1976. He then enrolled in the Univ. of Chicago Law School, where he graduated with honors in 1979.

His professional career includes work as a clerk for a federal judge with the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, an associate with a Washington, D.C. law firm, and his current position as professor of law and international studies at the University of Iowa, where he has served since 1983. He has authored or contributed to the writing of numerous books, chapters and articles during his career.

Ed, a native North Dakotan, grew up in a musical family in which both his father and grandfather were community band directors. He received a BS Degree in Music Education from UND, an MS Degree from UNC, and and Ed.D from UND.

His teaching career extended over 38 years, with the final 31 spent in the service of Fargo's northside and North High. He served as the Music Dept. Chair for a number of years, providing leadership for hundreds of students throughout their high school careers. Ed was an adjunct professor at MSUM for 3 ½ years after retiring from the Fargo Schools. The contributions and quality of his effort in the field of education led to his induction into the ND Music Educators Hall of Fame.

Ed continues to be active in the field of music through his directing of the Advanced Band for adults at the International Music Camp and the newly formed FM Golden Notes New Horizons Band, which is an adult basic band. He also performs on the trombone, tuba and electric bass in a number of local groups in the F-M area.

A 1972 graduate of North High, Dave earned varsity letters in hockey for three years and cross-country during his sophomore year. He was the hockey team captain during his senior season. Dave's interest in the school's marketing education program led him to enrollment at the U of MN-Crookston, where he earned an Associate Degree in Business in 1974.

While still attending North High, Dave started a fencing company, which, in 1974, formally became Dakota Fence Co. The firm, which specializes in fencing, highway signage and guardrails, along with playground equipment, expanded with offices in Minot (1977) and Bismarck (1980). 3-D Specialties was added to the company ledger in 1978, providing signage and traffic control on road construction projects throughout the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Montana.

Dave's personal interests have included widespread support of youth sports, playing a lead role in the organizing of girl's hockey in Fargo. He is very active in the preservation of wildlife, with memberships in the RMEF, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, and the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep.

Rebecca graduated from North High in 1968, having earned recognition as a North Dakota delegate to Girls Nation, membership in the National Honor Society, National Merit Scholar Semifinalist, and recipient of an AAL All-College Scholarship. In 1972, she earned a BA Degree from Valparaiso (IN) University, with a major in Humanities and a minor in Urban Studies.

She completed her Law Degree from the University of North Dakota in 1980, earning a No. 1 academic ranking. While attending law school, Rebecca served as an Articles Editor for the ND Law Review, was a member of the Order of the Coif, and a finalist for the Moot Court. She was also involved with the writing of legal reviews.

Her professional activities have included 23 years of general litigation and business practice; and her efforts have earned her numerous memberships and awards associated with the North Dakota Bar Association and its affiliated organizations. Rebecca became the first woman to be selected as president of the ND Bar Association. She is active with many professional and service organizations in the Bismarck-Mandan area.
