2015 Inductees

Jarret graduated from North High School in 1996, where he had been an active student leader; and was a letter winner and team captain in cross country and track during his years as a Spartan.

He attended Augustana College in Sioux Fall, SD from 1996 -2000, earning a BA Degree in Government. Jarret then enrolled at the University of Delaware, earning an MA Degree in Political Science (2002); and continued his studies there, earning a PhD in Political Science in 2006.

His professional work and appointments have included serving as a Fellow with the CIA in 2003, an Instructor at the Univ. of Delaware (2003-04), Adjunct Professor for Global Affairs at NYU, Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Social Sciences at the U.S. Military Academy (2004-08), as well as Director of Research in Combatting Terrorism Center during the same period. Jarret is the Managing Director of Cronus Global LLC (2008-present). He has authored or collaborated writings for numerous publications; and authored the book, Global Jihadism: Theory and Practice, (2008).

Since returning to the F-M area, Jarret has worked at NDSU as a Security Program Coordinator and Associate Research Fellow with the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute; and is presently working with the Wells Fargo enterprise.

Sean graduated from North High School in 1996. He enjoyed a celebrated career in athletics as a Spartan, having been active in football, hockey, and track and field. In football, he was a three-time letter winner, earning All-Conference and All-State honors three times, along with being selected the Gatorade Player of the Year in 1995. Sean was a two-year captain and member of the 1995 State Championship team. In hockey, he also served as captain two seasons, earned 4 letters, was selected All-State two years, and was a Mr. Hockey Finalist. He was a three-time letter winner in track and field, and a place-winner in the discus at the State Meet.

Following graduation from North, Sean attended the University of Minnesota, where he had been awarded a football scholarship. He earned his Bachelors Degree in 2000, in the field of Speech Communication. As a Gopher football player, he was a four-time letter winner, was a starting linebacker in 48 straight games, was a team captain and earned All-Big Ten honors in 2000.

Sean has been employed as a Financial Advisor for the last 13 years; and has found time to serve as a youth coach in soccer and hockey.

Marianna was born a Texan, but she and her family experienced many work-related stops east of the Mississippi before settling in Minot, ND, where she graduated from high school; and then earned an Education Degree in English from Minot State. She completed a Masters Degree in Reading at Moorhead State (MN), before starting her teaching career in Williston, ND.

She, and her husband, moved to Fargo in 1975, where she taught at NDSU for two years, before being hired to teach English at North High in 1977. Marianna enjoyed a storied career in teaching at North, retiring in the spring of 2010. Her work with students led to many of them receiving national writing awards as well as published works in poetry magazines.

Marianna received a grant for summer study from the National Endowment for the Arts; and was recognized by the ND Council of Teachers of English and YWCA’s Women of the Year program for her work in education. She served as advisor of North High’s Pom Pom group, transforming the activity and group’s name to Spartacas. They won 5 consecutive State titles; and she has since been selected to the ND Danceline Hall of Fame. She served two terms on the ND Standards and Practices Board, was a part of the ND DPI teams, and was selected the North High, FPS, and ND State Teacher of the Year in 2000. In 2010, through student effort, she received a Distinguished Teacher Award from the White House.

A native of Fargo, Carl graduated from South High School in 1970, where he was a three-sport athlete. He attended NDSU, where he earned both his Bachelors and Masters Degrees.

Carl’s teaching and coaching career included a year in Hettinger, ND, followed by a very successful teaching and coaching stop in Wahpeton, which lasted from 1975 to 1990. He came to North High in the fall of 1990, and served on the staff until his retirement in 2008. During his tenure, Carl was named a James Madison Fellow (1995), a U.S. Presidential Scholar Award Teacher recognition (2003), received the Gilder-Lehrman American ND History Teacher of the Year award (2006), won a Korean Studies Fellowship (2007), and was recognized as the North Teacher of the Year in 2008. He was very active in curriculum development, and founder of the Socrates Club at North.

His coaching career included working with football, volleyball, and track and field; and while at North, his teams won 3 State Volleyball titles, and he was named State Volleyball Coach of the Year in 1996.

Since leaving North High, Carl has held adjunct teaching positions at MSUM and NDSU; and he was a co-writer and co-producer for the Emmy Award-Winning “Road to Little Rock” film.

John graduated from North High School in 1979, and attended NDSU, earning a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education in 1984. He received further training at St. Mary’s University (MN), earning an MA Degree in Education in 2000.

As a student at North High, John played basketball for three years, including a role on the 1977 State Championship team. He also played football for two seasons, and was a part of the 1978 State Runner-up team.

John has been a teacher for 31 years, including stops in Wilsall, MT, Gardiner, MT, and Lakeville, MN the last 25 years. In addition to his teaching duties, John has coached football for 18 years (as an assistant), and basketball for 35 years (29 as a head coach. During his tenure in Montana, he coached his team to the 1989 Class C State Championship, with a 26-0 record, earning him the honor of MT State Coach of the Year. As the head coach in Lakeville, MN, John has been the Section 1 Coach of the Year seven times. His team won the Minnesota State Class AAAA Championship in 2015, and earned him the State Coach of the Year Award.

Granis graduated from North High School in 1979. She was a letter winner in track and field (1977); and competed in the State Meet in the long jump and 880 relay.

After leaving North High, Granis attended NDSU and St. Luke’s School of Nursing, earning a Diploma in Nursing in 1984, becoming a Registered Nurse. Following her college work, she had a brief stay in Idaho, before returning to Fargo and then on to the east coast. She worked in Maine, New Brunswick, and Vermont; and then served as a nurse in New Hampshire for two years. She earned a scholarship to attend Smith College in Northhampton, MA, earning a BA Degree in Anthropology in 1993. Her earlier work included 8 years at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Coupling her career with a personal interest in, and attraction to the outdoors and an active lifestyle, Granis became accomplished in underwater spearfishing; and in 2006, she was inducted into the Explorer’s Club, which is dedicated to promoting field service and exploration of sea, land, and space. She has been an expedition nurse working on projects sponsored by the Explorer’s Club and the U.S. Army Research Institute. She completed a B.S. Degree in Nursing program in 2015, and is awaiting induction into the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing honor society. Granis is currently working at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA.
